How to Use
Add Null To Layers is one of the fundamental scripts for rigging in After Effects. It creates parent nulls for your layers while intelligently preserving all existing relationships and timing.
Smart Positioning
By default, the script creates one null at the average position of all selected layers, making it perfect for grouping multiple elements. The null preserves parent chains and matches layer in/out points automatically.
Three Creation Modes
- • Click - Creates one null at the center of all selected layers for group control
- • Alt + Click - Creates a classic null at the composition center without position offset (useful for expressions)
- • Shift + Click - Creates individual nulls for each selected layer at their respective positions
Special Features
The script has special logic for handling puppet pins, creating controller nulls and linking them via expressions. This makes it invaluable for character rigging workflows.
Hierarchy Preservation
Works seamlessly with locked layers and preserves your layer selection and order. When creating nulls for other nulls, it creates special "primary nulls" with different colors for better organization.
Future-Proof Workflow
While this functionality became available natively in After Effects 2025, Add Null To Layers offers additional features like puppet pin handling and advanced positioning options that make it still valuable for complex rigging scenarios.
Perfect for Rigging
Essential for creating control systems, grouping animations, and building complex hierarchies that are easy to manage and animate.
